Description: Located in Old City, Tuna Bar is a Japanese Raw Bar & Restaurant on the ground floor of the Bridge on Race Apartment building. The concept called for a high end, contemporary take on traditional Japanese interiors, keeping quality and simplicity in mind. Seating areas on both sides have playful, warm oak planks jutting out from above which use the Japanese wood joinery technique. The bar is the center focus, covered in leathered stone, live edge sushi counter and chevron oak soffit with blackened steel shelving and trim above. Brass light fixtures light up the space and reflect in the antique mirror, adding depth to the dining area.

Located in the Spring Arts District, Russo Music can be found in an existing 2 story masonry space next to Union Transfer. Boxwood Architects was asked to provide a design that was sophisticated, but minimal to showcase the beautiful instruments. White washed brick provides a clean backdrop for the many guitars that line the walls and the backlit walnut columns create a pleasant rhythm through the long, slender space. The custom metal staircase and walnut display cases really relate to the craft and care that Russo Music exudes in its products.

The project is a 2,046sq ft Café /restaurant located in the base of an adaptive reuse project, mixed with a new 24 story residential tower. The restaurant portion is within a circa 1935 Art Deco façade. Program requirements include a daytime café that converts to evening dinner service, full-service bar/kitchen, an intermediate space that engages with tower lobby and outdoor seating. Primary design considerations were to create a space that was respectful and complimentary to the Art Deco façade, while at the same time considering the contemporary nature of the project development. This, while maximizing seating counts, production areas and solving the throughput equation of casual café, converting to restaurant.
Additional design inspirations focus: food, energy and warmth of Israeli bakeries. Considering their Israeli roots, the client wanted to bring that cultural experience to Philadelphia. Drawing from their European travel photos, specifically of Israeli open-air markets, we developed a design that called for light and airy daytime hues, with a vibrant evening bar. Detail and décor considerations concentrated primarily on a soft palette, with complimenting pops of color. Finishes and metal detailing speak to the ornament/geometry of Art Deco, with lighter wood tones, dark walnut trims and peach hue mirrors.

Merkaz is warm and bright, offering signature pita sandwiches, hummus, and salatim that showcase the very best of Israeli street food. As the Hebrew word for "center", Merkaz is designed to bring to life the rich colors, taste, and spirit of Israel in a welcoming neighborhood setting.
